The Santa Croce area circles the square, dominated by the Basilica from which it takes its name. This area was once a real island, situated between the two branches of the Arno that separated close to the actual Piazza Beccarla, and rejoined in front of the walls of the Via de’ Benci, where the apartment is. Piazza Santa Croce saw the day towards 1300 to accommodate the crowds of faithful people who were listening to the preaching of the Franciscans who had done a lot of good actions and had also built a church. Other important buildings of the square are the palazzo Cocchi-Serristori and the Antella Palace, as well as the Dante Alighieri monument. The Corsini-Serristori Palace, the Spinelli Palace and Giorgio Vasari’s house are also to be found in the area.
