A true historical residence, this castle dates back to 1000 AD, when it was built as a defence from Saracen attacks, and has belonged to the della Gherardesca family for thirty-seven generations. Further, the Gherardescas have two saints in the family, Saint Guido and Saint Walfredo. Of all the family’s ancestors, Conte Ugolino is without a doubt the most well-known. Dante wrote of him in one of his most famous and moving cantos in the Divine Comedy, where Count Ugolino is left to starve in a tower with his sons and grandsons. A statue of the Count now welcomes its visitors by the entrance of the Castle. A copy of the same sculpture can also be found at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
The Castle is an ideal location for events such as weddings, parties, cocktails, gala dinners, corporate lunches and dinners, seminars, presentations, tastings, fashion shoots, concerts, performances, to name only a few.
