Details

The house was designed by architect Joseph P Leeland of Boston and completed in 1927. It was built on the site of a previous large country home. The formal gardens date from early 20th century and the estate has belonged to a single family for more than 150 years.

Inside

The entrance opens onto a marble hall as well as a 1920s art deco-style living room with a Steinway grand piano. Both the formal dining room and the library are 18th century panelled rooms imported from English country houses. On the main floor is a small breakfast room, men’s and woman’s powder rooms, three coat rooms, a room to arrange flowers, and six fireplaces.  Hill House is furnished with antiques, art deco pieces and family heirlooms, including china ceramics and pottery. The main and second floor living space measure nearly 13000 square feet.

Bedrooms

9 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. All the bedrooms look out on extensive views of the Berkshire countryside and mountains of Connecticut and Massachusetts. Each bedroom has a distinct character and charm with 2 ideal for children. There is also a staff half bathroom on the main floor.

Outside

There are four formal garden areas on several levels. The large terrace leads directly onto the main lawn with a striking assemblage of ballet sculpture, a lily pool and fountain with uninterrupted northern views that can extend as far as Northern Massachusetts. The swimming pool is located on one of the lower garden areas and heated for late spring and early autumn use. There are spaces in several areas for croquet and badminton. On the property are fields, woods, ponds and a one-mile private walking trail.

Car

Hill House is located approximately three miles north of Salisbury, Connecticut, driving time to New York City is 2 hours; to Boston it is 3 hours; and to Hartford it is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Air

Bradley International Airport  (Hartford/Springfield) is 1hour 15minutes drive; Boston’s Logan International Airport is 3hours and15mins drive; and all 3 New York City Airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark) are approximately 2 hours 15minutes by car.

Train

Wassaic Station (Metro North/Harlem Line) is a 25-minute drive. It is then a 2 hour train ride to New York City’s Grand Central Station.

Staff & Dining

The main floor features a large well equipped chefs kitchen accompanied by three pantries and a sizeable extra kitchen work room.The chefs kitchen and pantries are well equipped.

There is also a full range of cooking ware, mixing machines, small appliances and implements. Glasses and table linens are also provided as well as an outdoor gas grill. During the warmer months there is access to a small vegetable and herb garden. There are many local organic farms, weekend farmers’ markets, and two nearby gourmet markets.

A caretaker/supervisor manages and oversees maintaining the property and is onsite daily for advice and help. House cleaning services are also included. Maid services (including laundry/ironing), and daily cook/butler services. Local chefs, caterers and additional staff can be arranged at an extra cost.

Things to Do

On the main floor is the a large games room with ping pong, board games and a puppet theatre, and an enclosed porch that serves as a media room.

There are spaces in several areas for croquet and badminton. On the property are fields, woods, ponds and a one-mile private walking trail.
