Things to Do

Mal Pais is home to some of the best surfing swells in the world. Surfing lessons from an experienced instructor are available for all levels.

Snorkelers can enjoy the clear waters in the large tide pools created during low tide. The tide pools are terrific for beginners or those who just prefer shallow waters. There are also numerous diving points between Mal Pais and Playa Hermosa that offer scuba diving for all experience levels.

We highly recommend renting an all terrain vehicle (ATV) or “quad” during your visit. It is a fun way to explore the area, and they are the preferred method of transportation for locals.

Several companies offer horseback riding tours through the jungle and/or across the beaches.

The waters around Mal Pais are home to a wide variety of fish species, and guests may find themselves reeling in sailfish, tuna, dorado, and mahi mahi. Most boats depart from the charming local fish market.

Journey through the treetops in this spectacular canopy tour located just minutes down the road from Ocio. The tour takes place on a farm with more than 200 different tree species, and it is located at the entrance of the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve.

Travel down the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula to Montezuma for a canopy tour featuring a series of nine cable lines and eleven platforms spanning over 1,200 meters. Guides take visitors through a tour that covers cascading waterfalls, lush forests, and a wide variety of flora and fauna. You can also hike to the waterfalls after the tour, so be sure to take a towel and bathing suit.

The Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is one of Costa Rica’s most stunning treasures, and it was the first National Park established in Costa Rica. The Reserve has a number of trails that wind through the park with varying levels of incline and difficulty. It is a majestic place for hiking, bird watching, and wildlife appreciation.

Tortuga Island is famous for its pristine white sand beach and turquoise waters; it is about an hour away from Ocio. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, beach combing, and exploration of the island. The tour also includes a visit to the Curu Wildlife Refuge.
